Global Leaders
China is the largest producer of industrial hemp, annually producing more than 70% of the world's volume. It is followed by Canada, where hemp is grown on more than 80,000 hectares, and European countries. France leads in Europe, having long traditions of hemp cultivation and a developed processing industry. The USA is rapidly increasing production after legalizing industrial hemp cultivation in 2018. Agrotechnology
Hemp prefers fertile, well-drained soils with pH 6.0-7.5. The optimal germination temperature is 8-10°C, allowing for early spring sowing. The plant quickly forms a deep root system, making it drought resistant. It's important to choose the right seeding density: denser sowing (50-70 kg/ha) is recommended for fiber, while sparser sowing (25-35 kg/ha) is better for seeds. Hemp is sensitive to day length, which affects flowering and maturation time.
Environmental Benefits
Hemp is one of the most environmentally friendly agricultural crops. It absorbs significant amounts of CO2 during growth - up to 15 tons per hectare. The deep root system helps prevent soil erosion and improves its structure. The plant has phytoremediation properties, capable of extracting heavy metals and other pollutants from soil. Hemp requires minimal pesticides thanks to its natural pest resistance and rapid growth that suppresses weeds.
Breeding and Genetics
Modern industrial hemp breeding is focused on creating varieties with improved characteristics: increased fiber content, optimized cannabinoid ratio (high CBD, minimal THC), disease resistance. Marker-assisted selection and genome editing methods are used. An important direction is the development of varieties adapted to different climatic conditions and purposes of use.
Growing Technologies
Modern hemp cultivation uses advanced technologies: GPS navigation for precision farming, drones for crop monitoring, automated irrigation systems. Proper soil preparation and crop rotation are important. Hemp fits well into organic farming due to its natural properties. Indoor growing technologies are developing for seed material production and specialized varieties.
Processing and Storage
After harvest, it's critically important to properly organize the processing and storage process. Mechanical decortication or traditional retting is used for fiber. Seeds require quick drying to 8-10% moisture and proper storage to maintain oil quality. New processing methods are developing, including enzymatic fiber treatment and supercritical CBD extraction. It's important to comply with quality and safety standards at all production stages.
